Popular Nigerian stand-up comedian and actor, Bovi Ugboma, has sparked a fresh conversation online after sharing his honest views on marriage, divorce, and the pressure of being a provider.
Appearing on a recent episode of The Morayo Show, Bovi explained that he does not view the end of a marriage as a tragedy if the union was making the couple miserable. In fact, he admitted that he “celebrates” divorce when it means people are finally escaping an unbearable situation.
According to him, divorce is often a relief. He noted that when a marriage is no longer healthy, ending it allows both partners to finally “breathe.”
“I will not suffer anybody, nor will I want anybody to suffer me,” the comedian stated, emphasizing that mental peace should come first.
While his comments might surprise some in a society like Nigeria—where divorce is often stigmatized and couples are encouraged to “endure” no matter what—Bovi was quick to clarify that he isn’t anti-marriage.
Reflecting on his own life, the 44-year-old revealed that his 17-year marriage has not been a walk in the park. He shared that he got married at the age of 29 and has been the primary provider for nearly two decades. He acknowledged that the journey has had its fair share of difficulties.
Bovi also touched on the traditional Nigerian expectation that the man must carry the entire financial burden of the home. He encouraged women to pursue their own ambitions and aim for financial independence. He argued that if a woman is passionate about contributing to the household, her efforts should be celebrated and respected, rather than dismissed.
Bovi’s message is clear: marriage should be a place of mutual respect and happiness, not a prison of “suffering and smiling.”
