Nigerian politician Reno Omokri has criticized Afrobeats star Davido. This disagreement started after Davido’s recent performance at a FIFA concert in Los Angeles. The singer used the global stage to speak for kidnapped Oyo schoolchildren. However, Reno believes this move was a “very big mistake.”
Davido’s Global Stage Message
During the concert, Davido wore a special black jacket. The names of 39 kidnapped children and seven teachers were on the jacket. These victims are from the Ahoro-Esinle and Yawota communities in Oyo State.
The back of his jacket had the words “Bring Them Home.” Underneath, he wore a white shirt with “Nigeria” printed on it. Many fans praised Davido for his kindness. They felt he was helping the world see the pain of these families.
Why Reno Omokri Disagrees
Reno Omokri released a statement to explain his worries. He says that publicity actually helps terrorists. Reno believes that criminals love global attention. He quoted a famous saying: “Publicity is the oxygen of terrorism.”
According to Reno, Davido has good intentions. However, he thinks the singer’s actions help the kidnappers more than the victims. He argues that when a case becomes famous, the kidnappers feel more powerful. This makes it harder for the government to rescue the victims.
Lessons from the Past
In Nigeria, we remember the #BringBackOurGirls campaign for the Chibok girls. Reno mentioned this event as an example. He said that global attention made the Chibok girls more valuable to Boko Haram. Because the world was watching, the terrorists refused to let them go easily.
Reno also spoke about his own work to free Leah Sharibu. He said experts told him that his public efforts made her harder to rescue. He believes the Nigerian government is already working to save the Oyo schoolchildren.
The Danger of Publicity
Reno concluded that the situation needs silence, not noise. He believes that high-level security operations work best away from the cameras. In his view, global outrage only gives terrorists more reasons to hold onto their victims.
Many Nigerians are now debating this issue. Some agree with Davido’s bold move. Others think Reno Omokri has a point about security.
