Dead or Alive!” — Senate Orders Arrest of Ex-NNPC Boss Mele Kyari Over N210 Trillion Scandal

The Nigerian Senate has issued a dramatic arrest warrant for former Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited boss Mele Kyari. Lawmakers want him produced before a committee — dead or alive. The order follows allegations of N210 trillion in unaccounted funds during his time at the helm of NNPCL.

What Did Mele Kyari Do?

First of all, Mele Kyari served as Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL from 2019 to 2025. During his tenure, the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation raised serious queries. Specifically, audit reports covering 2017 to 2023 show unresolved financial discrepancies amounting to over N210 trillion. In addition, separate investigations involve allegations of over $7.2 billion in missing refinery funds.

These are staggering figures. To put it simply — this is one of the biggest corruption probes in Nigerian history.

Senate Issues Arrest Warrant

Consequently, the Senate Committee on Public Accounts ran out of patience. Kyari had been invited multiple times to appear before the committee. Each time, he failed to show up. Therefore, on Wednesday June 10, 2026, the committee chairman Ibrahim Dankwambo issued a clear directive.

“For Mele Kyari, wherever he is, he should be arrested and brought before this committee immediately,” Dankwambo ruled.

Oshiomhole’s Explosive Statement

Meanwhile, former Edo State Governor and Senator Adams Oshiomhole delivered the most dramatic moment of the hearing. He rose to support the arrest motion with fire and fury.

“This committee must have the courage and the will to deploy its powers as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution and issue a warrant — not tomorrow, but today,” he thundered.

“Bring Mele Kyari here, dead or alive. Even if he is dead, we want to see the body and say: here lies a man who died without accounting for his alleged crimes running into trillions.”

The statement sent shockwaves through the chamber and quickly went viral across Nigeria.

Kyari Says He Is Sick in Germany

However, Kyari has pushed back. Senator Tony Nwoye told the committee that he had spoken personally with Kyari. According to Nwoye, the former NNPCL boss said he was hospitalised in Germany for medical treatment. Furthermore, Kyari himself wrote a letter dated June 10, 2026, saying he had informed the committee as far back as May 8 that he was abroad on medical grounds.

Nevertheless, the committee dismissed the excuse. Senator Nwebonyi interrupted Nwoye sharply, saying: “You are not Kyari’s lawyer!”

Why This Matters for Nigerians

In conclusion, this case goes to the heart of Nigeria’s biggest problem — accountability for public funds. At a time when millions of Nigerians are suffering from economic hardship, the thought of N210 trillion in unaccounted oil money is deeply painful.

As a result, Nigerians are watching this case very closely. The question on everyone’s lips is simple — will Mele Kyari actually be arrested? Or will this be another case of strong words with no action?
