ADC deregistration has sparked fresh political controversy after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar reacted to a Federal High Court ruling ordering the removal of the African Democratic Congress and four other political parties from Nigeria’s political landscape.
The former presidential candidate accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of attempting to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Court Orders ADC Deregistration
First of all, Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja reportedly ordered the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and four other political parties.
The affected parties include the Action Alliance (AA), Accord Party, Action Peoples Party (APP) and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).
Furthermore, the court directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to implement the ADC deregistration and that of the affected parties immediately.
The ruling was based on allegations that the parties failed to meet constitutional requirements expected of registered political parties in Nigeria.
Atiku Rejects ADC Deregistration Ruling
Meanwhile, Atiku Abubakar strongly criticised the court’s decision through a statement issued by his spokesperson, Paul Ibe.
According to the statement, Atiku described the judgment as the “height of judicial rascality” and accused the ruling government of attempting to undermine opposition voices.
Moreover, he argued that an earlier order by the Court of Appeal had directed the trial court to stay further proceedings on the matter.
The former vice president claimed that the appellate court had already scheduled a hearing on the case for October 27, 2026.
