Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has officially resumed duty in Doha as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar.
The Mahmood Yakubu Qatar appointment marks a new chapter in the diplomat’s public service career following the completion of his tenure as INEC chairman in October 2025.
According to a statement issued by his former Chief Press Secretary, Sam Olumekun, Yakubu arrived in Doha and was warmly received by senior Qatari officials and members of the Nigerian community.

Upon arrival at the airport, Yakubu was received by Ibrahim Yousif Abdullah Fakhro, Director of Protocol Department at Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Furthermore, 13 African ambassadors joined the reception team, demonstrating Qatar’s formal recognition of Nigeria’s new envoy.
Also present were Dr. Philip Mshelbila, Secretary General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, and Michael Ndukaihe Ihekwaba, President of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation in Qatar.
The reception highlighted the importance of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Qatar and the expectations surrounding Yakubu’s new role.
Nigeria and Qatar Deepen Diplomatic Relations
Nigeria and Qatar established diplomatic relations in 2010. Both countries later opened embassies in Abuja and Doha in 2013.
Relations between the two nations have strengthened over the years through high-level visits and bilateral agreements.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari visited Qatar in 2016. Subsequently, Qatar’s ruler, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, visited Nigeria in 2019.
Moreover, President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Qatar in 2024 further enhanced cooperation between both countries. During the visit, several agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed.

Energy Cooperation Key for Mahmood Yakubu Qatar Mission
One of the major areas of cooperation between Nigeria and Qatar is the energy sector.
Qatar remains one of the world’s leading exporters of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), while Nigeria possesses vast natural gas reserves.
Therefore, a major diplomatic objective for Yakubu will be to strengthen energy cooperation between the two nations.
Experts believe his role will include supporting Nigeria’s Decade of Gas initiative by attracting Qatari investment and technical expertise into the country’s energy industry.
Furthermore, both countries are expected to explore opportunities for mutual growth in gas production, energy infrastructure, and investment partnerships.
Investment and Diaspora Engagement Among Priorities
Beyond energy, Yakubu will also be expected to attract foreign direct investment from Qatar.
The Qatar Investment Authority manages assets worth more than $500 billion. Consequently, Nigeria hopes to attract investment into agriculture, aviation, real estate, and digital infrastructure sectors.
In addition, Yakubu will work closely with the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation in Qatar to improve consular services and protect the welfare of Nigerians living and working in the Gulf region.
He is also expected to promote structured channels that can help direct diaspora remittances into productive investments in Nigeria.
Background to Yakubu’s Appointment
Professor Mahmood Yakubu made history as the first INEC chairman to serve two terms in office.
After completing his tenure in October 2025, he was among the 32 ambassadorial nominees submitted to the Senate by President Bola Tinubu in November 2025.
Following Senate confirmation, President Tinubu approved the appointment of 65 ambassadors-designate on March 6, 2026.
Yakubu was subsequently assigned as Nigeria’s ambassador to Qatar.
The Mahmood Yakubu Qatar appointment represents an important step in Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement with the Gulf region.
As ambassador, Yakubu will be tasked with strengthening bilateral relations, attracting investment, promoting energy cooperation, and supporting Nigerians living in Qatar.
