Atiku Reacts as Appeal Court Stops ADC Deregistration Ahead of 2027 Election

The ADC deregistration ruling has sparked fresh reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has welcomed the Court of Appeal’s decision to halt the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and four other political parties.

Furthermore, the ruling has strengthened the position of the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general election.

Appeal Court Grants Relief to ADC

The Court of Appeal in Abuja ruled in favour of the ADC and four other affected political parties.

The parties involved include the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Accord, Action Alliance (AA), Action Peoples Party (APP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

According to the appellate court, an earlier Federal High Court judgment that ordered the deregistration of the parties should not have been delivered while an appeal was pending.

Consequently, the court ordered a stay of execution of the judgment.

The ruling provides temporary relief for the affected political parties as legal proceedings continue.

Court Criticises Lower Court Decision

The three-member panel stated that the lower court acted despite an existing order from the Court of Appeal.

According to the judges, the Federal High Court had previously been instructed to suspend proceedings pending the determination of appeals before the appellate court.

However, the lower court reportedly proceeded with its judgment.

As a result, the Court of Appeal criticised the action and described it as a violation of judicial hierarchy.

The panel further stated that ignoring a valid stay order undermines the authority of higher courts.

Atiku Welcomes the Verdict

Reacting to the decision, Atiku Abubakar expressed satisfaction with the ruling.

The former presidential candidate noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reportedly supported the application for a stay of execution.

Furthermore, Atiku warned against any attempt to weaken Nigeria’s democratic institutions through judicial actions.

According to him, the rule of law must remain the foundation of Nigeria’s democracy.

He also urged the judiciary to continue protecting constitutional principles and democratic values.

What the Ruling Means for 2027 Elections

The latest decision means that ADC and the other affected parties remain recognised while the legal process continues.

Meanwhile, political observers believe the ruling could have significant implications ahead of the 2027 elections.

The ADC has recently emerged as one of the opposition parties attracting attention from key political figures.

Therefore, the outcome of the legal battle may influence future political alignments and election preparations.

Conclusion

The ADC deregistration ruling remains an important development in Nigeria’s political space.

While the legal dispute is not yet over, the Court of Appeal’s decision has given the affected parties temporary relief.

Meanwhile, Atiku Abubakar has described the verdict as a positive step for democracy and the rule of law.
