Self-styled relationship expert, Blessing Okoro, popularly known as Blessing CEO, is back in the news for the wrong reasons. On Monday, June 10, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) brought her before a Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, to face a fresh six-count charge of fraud.
This time, the allegations are quite serious and have touched a nerve with many Nigerians. The EFCC claims that Blessing CEO defrauded “good-spirited” Nigerians of ₦13 million. How did she do it? According to the anti-graft agency, she publicly claimed she was battling Stage 4 breast cancer and desperately needed money for treatment.
Trusting Nigerians and various organizations, including the Nigeria Cancer Society, reportedly donated money to save her life. However, investigations by the EFCC suggest that the medical documents she used to back up her claims were completely fake.
The Nigerian Perspective: A Blow to Public Trust
In Nigeria, crowdfunding for medical bills on social media has become a lifeline for many genuinely sick people who cannot afford the high cost of healthcare. When an influencer with a large following is accused of “faking” such a deadly illness for money, it creates a huge problem. It makes people hesitant to help those who are actually dying, as many now fear being scammed by “clout-chasers.”
Not Her First Rodeo
This ₦13 million case is just one of many legal battles currently facing the controversial influencer. Just a day before this arraignment, she was in a different court in Ikeja facing charges for an alleged ₦69.15 million fraud.
As it stands, Blessing CEO is juggling three different criminal cases in Lagos courts. While she is presumed innocent until proven guilty, these mounting legal troubles are a major setback for the “relationship therapist.”
The case has been adjourned, and Nigerians are watching closely to see how the court will handle these heavy allegations.
