The wait is almost over for the first group of Nigerians returning home from South Africa. Following the recent wave of xenophobic attacks targeting foreigners, the Federal Government has confirmed that the first batch of repatriated citizens will arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos this Thursday morning.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, revealed that the returnees are expected to touch down at approximately 5:00 a.m.
To ensure their safe return, an Air Peace flight has been scheduled to depart from O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Wednesday night. This move comes as a relief to many families who have been worried about the safety of their loved ones living in South Africa.
The decision to bring these Nigerians home follows a series of unfortunate attacks on foreign nationals and their businesses. For many Nigerians, the news of these attacks was heartbreaking, especially considering the long-standing relationship between the two countries. While South Africa is a popular destination for Nigerians seeking greener pastures, the current climate of fear has made staying there impossible for many.
The Federal Government has emphasized that this repatriation is voluntary, focusing on those who feel their lives are at risk. Authorities have also assured the public that they are working closely with South African officials to ensure the safety of Nigerians who choose to remain, while also seeking long-term solutions to prevent such violence from happening again.
As we prepare to welcome our brothers and sisters back home, this moment serves as a reminder that there is truly no place like home. We hope for a smooth arrival and a quick transition for everyone returning to start their lives afresh in Nigeria.
