A tragic case of mob violence has rocked Maraban Jos in Kaduna State after a woman identified as Malama Ummulkhairi was killed and her body set ablaze over allegations of child theft.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, June 21, 2026, has triggered widespread condemnation and renewed concerns about jungle justice and rising mob attacks fueled by rumours.
Allegation That Sparked Chaos
First of all, reports indicate that the deceased was an Islamic teacher and mother of more than five children. She had travelled from New Maraban Jos to attend an Islamic lecture in the Old Maraban Jos area.
However, she reportedly got separated from her group and asked children in the area for directions. Shortly after, some residents accused her of attempting to abduct children.
Meanwhile, witnesses and family members strongly denied the allegation, insisting it was false and based on misunderstanding.
Police Intervention Before Escalation
As tension increased, security operatives moved the woman to a nearby police station for protection and investigation.
Furthermore, her family members arrived at the station and identified her as a respected Islamic teacher with no criminal record.
According to reports, police officers tried to calm the situation and urged residents to allow proper investigation. Nevertheless, the crowd outside the station became increasingly agitated.
Mob Attack on Police Station
In a shocking turn of events, a large mob later stormed the police station. They overpowered officers on duty and forcibly removed the woman from protective custody.
Consequently, she was killed and her body was set on fire in a brutal act that has drawn national outrage.
The incident has raised serious questions about public trust in law enforcement and the growing spread of mob justice in some communities.
Police Reaction and Ongoing Investigation
Reacting to the incident, the Kaduna State Police Command described the attack as barbaric and a direct assault on the rule of law.
Police spokesperson DSP Mansir Hassan confirmed that the woman had been taken into custody for her safety before the mob attack occurred.
In addition, the command stated that several suspects have already been arrested while efforts continue to track others involved.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, warned against jungle justice and stressed that no one has the right to take the law into their own hands.
He urged residents to report suspicious situations to security agencies instead of acting on rumours or emotions.
Authorities assured that a full investigation is ongoing and that all perpetrators will be brought to justice.
