The atmosphere in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, is heavy with tears and anger as the abduction of over 40 students and their teachers enters its 25th day. While families are left in agony, a new video from the kidnappers’ den has sent shockwaves across the country, exposing a possible cover-up.
Mrs. Rachael Alamu, the Principal of Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele, who is among those held captive, has sent a desperate plea to President Bola Tinubu and Governor Seyi Makinde. In an emotion-laden video, she begged the government to stop “playing politics” with their lives by spreading false information about the kidnappers’ demands.
The “Sharia Law” Controversy
Earlier reports had suggested that the bandits were demanding the implementation of Sharia Law and a massive ransom of 1 billion Naira. However, Mrs. Alamu has come out to say those reports are completely false.
Speaking from the hideout, she clarified that the kidnappers have not forced them to worship in any Islamic way, nor have they asked for money. According to her, the bandits have only one demand: the release of some of their members currently held by the government.
“They are not asking for Sharia law. They are not asking for weapons or money,” Mrs. Alamu said. “Please, Nigerians, help us make this go viral. Don’t let the government deceive the world.”
Why the Delay?
The people of Ogbomoso are asking a very painful question: Why is the government moving so slowly?
On Monday, hundreds of residents blocked major highways in protest. They compared the situation to the recent kidnapping of the sister of former Minister Bayo Adelabu. In that case, the victims were rescued within just three days.
“Why can’t the government use that same magic to bring back our children and teachers who have been suffering for 25 days?” one protester lamented.
Current Situation
As it stands, schools remain shut as the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) continues its strike in solidarity with the victims. The coordinated abduction, which took place on May 15, 2026, at Baptist Nursery and Primary School and other nearby schools, has left the community in a state of fear and total lockdown.
The message from the victims is clear: Negotiate, don’t use force, and tell the truth so they can come home alive.
