The people of Lapai in Niger State have been thrown into deep mourning following the sudden and tragic death of a 14-year-old boy. The teenager, identified as Yahaya Ibrahim Tafida, was reportedly killed by a lightning strike during a heavy rainstorm.
Yahaya, who was a student at the Police Secondary School in Minna, met his untimely end on Monday evening, June 8, 2026. According to local sources, the young boy was enjoying a game of football with his friends at the Government Girls’ Day Secondary School field when the weather suddenly changed.
As the clouds gathered and a strong windstorm began, the boys tried to seek cover. Unfortunately, Yahaya and some of his peers decided to take shelter under a tree to wait out the rain. It was at that moment that lightning struck the tree, killing the 14-year-old instantly.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a painful reminder of the dangers of the rainy season in Nigeria. While it is common for children to want to play in the rain or seek shelter under trees, safety experts often warn that standing under tall objects like trees or poles during a thunderstorm is extremely dangerous, as they often attract lightning.
The entire Lapai community is currently in shock, as family and friends mourn the loss of a young life full of potential.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Yahaya Ibrahim Tafida during this difficult time.
