Tragedy in Niger State: Bandits Abduct Pregnant Woman and Three Others in Midnight Raid

Fear has gripped the residents of Maikadauri village in the Kontagora Local Government Area of Niger State following a violent night attack by bandits. The gunmen, who stormed the community on Monday, June 8, 2026, abducted four women, including a heavily pregnant woman.

The raid turned deadly as one person was confirmed killed during the operation. A local vigilante identified as Amos, who bravely rushed out to help residents during the attack, was shot in the leg and is currently dealing with the injury.

Speaking on the incident, a resident of Kontagora, Habibu Mohammed, lamented that despite the efforts of security agencies, communities on the outskirts of the town are still being targeted by criminals. He urged the government to take more decisive action to protect the lives and properties of the people.

This latest attack is part of a worrying trend of insecurity in the state. Just a day before the Kontagora incident, two young men, Sidiq Musa and Bashar Bisalla, were shot dead by gunmen in Wawa, Borgu Local Government Area. The victims were simply in the forest to collect firewood—a common source of livelihood for many in the area—when they were ambushed.

Records show that the Wawa forest has become a danger zone, with at least seven young men killed in the same area within the last 110 days while searching for wood.

The people of Niger State are calling for increased security patrols and better protection for rural communities who are now living in constant fear of the next attack.
