The UK government has officially released the salary breakdown for prison officers in 2026. For many Nigerians looking to “Japa,” these figures look very attractive. However, there is a hidden side to the story that every Nigerian should know before applying.
Breaking Down the Numbers
The amount a prison officer earns depends on two main things: how many hours they work and where the prison is located. Most new officers start with a 37-hour weekly contract.
In Inner London (places like Brixton and Wandsworth), a new officer can earn between £39,493 and £44,474. When you convert this to Nigerian currency, it is roughly ₦72 million to ₦81 million per year.
In Outer London (places like Belmarsh), the pay is between £37,525 and £44,258. This is about ₦68 million to ₦80 million annually. Prisons in other parts of the UK pay slightly less, starting at around ₦64 million.
The Nigerian Perspective: The “Japa” Struggle
While these millions of Naira sound like a dream, the reality on the ground is different for many. In 2023, the UK added prison officers to the list of jobs eligible for a “Skilled Worker Visa.” This led to a wave of Nigerian recruitment.
Sadly, reports have surfaced that over 200 Nigerian recruits are currently struggling. Some are even homeless or sleeping in their cars. Because the cost of living and rent in the UK is very high, many Nigerians find it hard to afford a house near their workplace.
For instance, one Nigerian recruit was reportedly driving 70 miles every day to get to work. To save money, he eventually decided to sleep in his car outside the prison. This shows that while the salary is high, the expenses in the UK can take it all away.
Is it Worth the Move?
If you are planning to join the UK military or prison service, you must do your research first. High salaries in Naira do not always mean a easy life abroad.
