Two Soldiers Killed as Military Vehicle Hits Explosive Device in Sokoto

A Sokoto explosive device attack has reportedly claimed the lives of two soldiers and left several others injured in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The incident occurred on Saturday when troops were responding to a distress call from residents of Bargaja community following a bandit attack.

Troops Responding to Bandit Attack

According to residents, armed bandits invaded Bargaja community between 12:30 a.m. and 3:00 a.m.

The attackers reportedly fired several gunshots, forcing residents to seek help from security agencies.

As a result, military personnel were deployed to the area to restore order and protect residents.

Military Vehicle Hits Explosive Device

Sources said the troops were travelling along the Isa-Bargaja road when their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device (IED).

The explosion reportedly affected several soldiers on board the vehicle.

Furthermore, witnesses claimed that one injured soldier later sought help in the community after sustaining serious leg injuries.

Residents said the Sokoto explosive device attack happened on a key road connecting Isa and Bargaja communities.

Residents Express Concern

Community members expressed concern over the growing use of explosive devices by armed groups operating in the area.

One resident said he personally saw the bodies of two soldiers after the incident.

However, he noted that the exact number of casualties had not been officially confirmed.

Meanwhile, residents called on security authorities to strengthen operations against criminal groups in the region.

Reports of Ambush Emerge

Another source familiar with the incident alleged that the troops were ambushed while responding to the emergency call.

According to the source, an Armoured Personnel Carrier leading the convoy passed through safely.

However, attackers allegedly targeted a Hilux vehicle behind it using gunfire and an explosive device.

The source claimed the attack was carefully coordinated by the assailants.

Community Visits Military Camp

Following the incident, some residents reportedly travelled to the military camp in Isa town to sympathise with the troops.

The residents expressed condolences over the loss of military personnel during the operation.

In addition, reports indicated that the remains of the deceased soldiers were later moved to Sokoto.

Security Situation Remains Tense

Residents said gunfire echoed across the area throughout the night.

Consequently, many people remained indoors due to safety concerns.

Authorities are yet to release an official statement confirming the number of casualties from the Sokoto explosive device attack.

Investigations and security operations are expected to continue in the affected communities.
