President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s determination to defeat insecurity and secure the release of all persons held captive across the country.

President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity and improving the economic conditions of Nigerians, assuring citizens that efforts are underway to address the nation’s most pressing challenges.

The President’s message was delivered by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, during a National Inter-Denominational Church Service held in Abuja as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

Speaking at the event, Akume highlighted Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance since 1999, describing the achievement as a reflection of the determination and sacrifices made by citizens and pro-democracy advocates over the years.

He paid tribute to those who played significant roles in the June 12 democracy struggle, noting that many endured hardship and persecution in the fight to restore democratic rule in Nigeria.

According to the SGF, the Federal Government remains focused on delivering the benefits of democracy through policies aimed at reducing economic hardship and improving the welfare of citizens. He acknowledged the challenges facing many Nigerians, including rising living costs, insecurity, kidnappings and the displacement of communities.

Akume said the government recognizes the difficulties being experienced across the country and is working to provide lasting solutions through responsible governance and targeted interventions.

On security matters, he emphasized that protecting lives and property remains a top priority for the administration. He assured Nigerians that efforts are being intensified to secure the release of individuals currently being held captive and to strengthen the capacity of security agencies in combating criminal activities.

The SGF stated that the government would continue supporting security institutions with the resources needed to defend communities, maintain law and order, and safeguard Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

As political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum, Akume called on citizens to uphold peace and reject violence, hate speech and divisive politics. He urged young people not to allow themselves to be manipulated into acts of political violence, misinformation or ethnic and religious intolerance.

He also appealed to religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society groups, media organizations and families to promote unity, tolerance and peaceful coexistence across the country.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to democracy and national unity, the SGF expressed confidence in the resilience of the country’s democratic institutions despite current challenges.

He further commended members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their dedication to protecting the nation and preserving democratic governance.

The Democracy Day celebration concluded with a renewed call for Nigerians to work together in building a peaceful, secure and prosperous nation where citizens can enjoy the full benefits of democracy.
